Instructions and Pattern Books

An instruction book has all the detailed information needed to create the specific basket for any experience level. It teaches everything about basket coiling related to the specific basket as well as the unique aspects of the basket.

A pattern book includes the design and instructions unique to a specific type of basket including all the advanced skills of the basket. A pattern book does not include basic coiling information. If you own any instruction book you can refer to the basic information as needed.

The instructions contained in my books are the result of many years of teaching and providing material to support students as they make a basket in or after class. In presenting the material, I have written from the perspective of an instructor keeping in mind your needs as the crafter seeking to acquire the skills necessary to perform the various operations leading to a finished basket in which we may both take pride.

You will find that I provide an abundance of figures coordinated with the text in order to guide you through the various stitching instructions. As an example of the detail, I have anticipated your stitching needs by defining the length of thread you will need in certain operations where extending thread is very cumbersome.

IB-144Round Basket & Raffia
The coiling of this basket proceeds from a walnut center and forms the base of nine coils and then proceeds to form a side of five coils. Four walnut wafers are evenly spaced on the fifth coil. After the last wafer is coiled the coil is terminated. An additional four wafers are placed and a new coil is attached over them beginning at the point over one of the wafers that were coiled prior to the coil being terminated. The coiling of the new wafers continues until the four new ones are completely coiled and then one additional coil is added. The spaces adjacent to the wafers have raffia enhancement.

IB-147French Top Twist
The name of this basket brings to mind the shape necessary to accommodate the size of a French loaf of bread. A basket request from a friend of our daughter led to this design. One can almost smell the aroma of fresh baked bread. The basket begins with a single long coil that folds at the end and then continues the pattern until a suitable base is complete. The coiling proceeds to form sides and then spans a walnut wafer at each end. Woven coils are added to form twists on each side of the basket. They are just waiting to be joined by a twisted loaf of French bread.

IB-148Heritage Basket Instructions
This basket begins with a slice of cedar that is an interesting point of focus for the rest of the basket. The cedar center provides a starting point for coiling from which to add to the wood base. The coiling proceeds to form the beginning of the side, which have two tiers of walnut wafers integrated into the coiling as enhancement to the basket. In addition to its attractiveness, it is an excellent basket for serving baked goods or as an attractive display item as well.

IB-149Flower Garden Basket Instructions
Expanding and decreasing coil diameter creates a wide oval base. Folding the base about the center forms the sides of this pine needle basket giving it its flowing contour. This stage assisted by temporary threads, maintain the shape while coiling the handle. Raffia enhances the handle where it joins the sides.

IB-160Circle Basket Instructions
The circular views of this basket, starting at the base and continuing into the sides and handle, helped inspire its name. This versatile basket can be used in a number of practical ways in addition to being an attractive display item when it is not in use. The crafter will experience many techniques in completing the design from coiling as though being a potter in forming the sides and then flowing into symmetrical handles.

IB-170Cheekwood
This basket design was inspired while visiting Nashville, Tennessee. My wife and I toured a museum, called the Cheekwood Museum of Art; which contained a collection of beautiful artworks. One of the small porcelain baskets on display had a center dividing two tapered sides. I admired the simplicity, yet elegance of this piece. This artistry stimulated me to consider its unique form for a pine needle basket. My goal was not to copy the article, but to interpret, its beauty into pine straw, through my eyes and emotions. I made a hand sketch, to help me recall the basic features of the work, and the approximate size and proportions. A Blue Ribbon, at the North Carolina State Fair, has confirmed the pine needle vision. The basket in this instruction book is similar to one like the Blue Ribbon winner, but simplified for the classroom and the instruction guide.

IB-750Spiral Basket
This basket design is inspired by our solar system, the sun at the center and planets in orbit rotating about it and held in place by gravitational forces. The walnut wafer center provides a starting point for a continuous coil. The basket begins with a coil stitched to the wafer with nylon thread and then the coil, formed with longleaf pine, joined by stitching the coil to the previously formed coil. The coiling proceeds to form the base and then as the side is stitched additional wafers are added one after each complete coiling. The wafers integrated into the coiling as an enhancement to the basket have a likeness to the planets. In addition to its attractiveness, it is an excellent basket for serving baked goods or as an attractive display item as well.

IB-770Triangle Vision
Research Triangle Park (RTP) named for its location bounded by Universities in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham North Carolina, was the result of the foresight of leaders that understood that the economic base would diminish and it was time to plan for the future. That future came to me through IBM at its location in the Triangle. The center of the basket is a triangle of walnut wafers surrounded by Long Leaf Pine and then additional walnut wafers. The Triangle Vision basket expands from that center as RTP has grown from its inception and has afforded many with exceptional and challenging opportunities. I was challenged to transform this geographic triangular configuration into the Native Long Leaf and pass that challenge onto you.

IB-900Tri Stage
The Tri Stage Basket concept brings together instructions progressing from the very basic in Stage I, to the next level of complexity Stage II to a more challenging basket in Stage III. At each stage, the crafter is given the option of completing a work or continuing. Techniques and methods explored in this instruction book are fundamental in many of the baskets, for which I have been awarded first place honors. As with any new endeavor, the learning path may be challenging and tedious, not to mention frustrating but the result can be worth it all. Acknowledging this reality and drawing on my many years of experience making and teaching coiled pine needle basketry has motivated me to write my basic instruction book, so that the new crafter will experience success and pleasure after completing any one of the stages. This book contains over 100 illustrations, digital photographs and hand drawn figures to guide the crafter.
